Deepwater Public School offers its students a broad range of
musical opportunities and experiences. The school is the base for the State Small Schools Marimba Ensemble which has
performed at the annual Schools Spectacular at the Sydney Entertainment Centre
as well as the Opera House Choral and Instrumental Concert Series several times
in recent years.
In 2007 the school took part in local district eisteddfods in percussion,
recorder and choral sections and participated in the Northern New
England Creative Arts Festival. The School also won the prestigious ABC Flame
Award for the most "innovative, impactful and inclusive" music program
in a NSW Primary School.
All students are involved in the school's marimba performance program.
Marimbas are
large xylophone type instruments based upon traditional African designs and are
played by 2-3 students at once. The school has made and decorated its own
marimbas as well as a wide selection of "wacky" percussion instruments
and, more recently, a set of stringed echocellos. For more about our wonderful
array of instruments, visit our "Great Instruments" link.
